Design Characteristics
Merida's hempgrass and seagrass bring a touch of natural, exotic elegance to any room. These grass area rugs are durable and easy to clean, making them ideal for kitchens and high-traffic areas. Thanks to their warm colors and unusual texture, they also serve as attractive wall coverings.
The varied weave structures of our grass rugs are formed with hemp
and/or seagrass yarns. Hemp is a brownish color, while seagrass ranges
between khaki tans and sage greens.
Merida grass rugs show the variations of their undyed natural materials,
which is a large part of their appeal. Smooth and comfortable to the
touch, they are also strong and highly abrasion- and moisture-resistant.
Sustainability
Hemp and seagrass are rapidly renewable materials. Growing hemp requires
no pesticides because the plant does not attract pests. As a result, it
is one of the world's most eco-friendly crops. Producing our grass rugs with hempgrass or seagrass involves minimal processing, and much of the resultant waste
material can be used for fuel or other purposes.
Cultivation & Production
Most of the world's hemp and seagrass grows in China, and harvesting is
usually done by hand. In order to extract the fibers, the stalks may be
soaked in water or water-based solutions for up to one week. Our grass
rugs, however, use unprocessed stalks rather than the extracted fibers
for a fresh, organic look.
All Merida hempgrass rugs and seagrass rugs are woven by machine, not hand.
