Sustainability has been a core value at Merida Meridian for over 30 years. To us, sustainability encompasses the continuity and permanence of families, communities, organizations and the earth itself. We dedicate ourselves to and are guided by this principle.

Of course, being a sustainable company involves complex environmental, social and economic considerations. We thoughtfully weigh these interrelated factors in all our business decisions, bringing us closer to the ideal of 100% sustainability every day.

Sustainability and the Environment
Environmental stewardship begins with the materials we use in our textiles: natural plant fibers (e.g. sisal, jute, abaca, seagrass, hempgrass) and animal fibers like wool. These materials are sustainable because they:
  • Produce oxygen and capture CO2 emissions prior to harvesting (except for wool)
  • Are rapidly renewable
  • Are intrinsically biodegradable or compostable
  • Help preserve indoor air quality and contribute to a safe home environment for our customers

In addition, we are constantly striving to understand our environmental footprint — and exploring ways to reduce it. Our manufacturing practices seek to maximize energy conservation while minimizing processing, waste and pollution. We work with our partners worldwide to implement these eco-friendly practices.

Promoting Social and Economic Development
Merida has established partnerships with suppliers and manufacturers around the globe. Through these relationships — and our engagement in our home cities of Boston and Fall River, Massachusetts — we actively promote the social and economic health of the communities in which we live and do business. We often visit our partners in developing countries to help them make positive changes for their business, their employees and their local community.

All Merida partners must comply with our social and labor standards, which include:
  • Fair compensation for workers
  • Zero tolerance for child labor
  • High health and safety standards
  • Non-discriminatory hiring practices
In the economic realm, we pay partners a fair price for their products and services and assist them in developing technical skills and capabilities. Taking these actions makes a positive impact in the local communities while also strengthening the stability and quality of our supply chain.
